About 10 years ago, I abandoned something I truly loved and replaced it with something else I truly loved. I new in my heart I would someday get it back. There is enough love in our hearts for everything or everyone?! Isn’t that how the saying goes? Ha. Anyway, 10 years ago, triathlon won in the hierarchy of what I had time for aside from the big 3 (husband, kids, and work).
I used to knit. I’m talking HARDCORE knit! As in gloves with 5 fingers, intricate purses, sweaters, baptismal sets, you name it. I taught myself by reading a book. I loved the process; picking out the pattern, shopping for the yarn, making the piece, and most excitingly presenting it as a gift. I hardly ever kept anything for myself. I suppose some of my peeps were like “Lord help me, not some of her knitted crap.” but I didn’t care! To me it was cathartic and creatively challenging and all sorts of stuff that I needed as a mother to 2 toddlers.
The day finally arrived last weekend. I drug the big crate of “knitting stuff” (as it is labeled on the side) out of the basement and GOT IT ON! I swear it is literally like riding a bike. I haven’t touched the needles in 10 years. But it came back so easily. I figured I should start out simple. So I am making a few washcloths. Silly, yes. Then it’s on to socks. Work boot socks. The kind my well drilling daddy’s momma used to make and he will love. Christmas is coming friends!
And Bob Barker from the Price is Right says, “It’s a new car!” The crowd goes wild. What do you think? It’s wild, eh? We now have a third driver in the house. I HAD a nice Malibu. In the world of cars I know that is ho-hum and not-so-great but it was “nice” to me. My husband had a literally 20 year old pickup. Chevy all the way, baby! Anyway, these children are like little termites and don’t stop til they’ve chewed you up and spit you out. “We NEED another car. Can I have a car?” and my favorite “Everyone ELSE has a car.” I don’t think so girlie!
